If any portion of the route is down or overloaded, you’ll see a * instead of a response time. You can use this information to figure out if the network outage is on a portion of the network that you control, or if it’s some sort of transient Internet weirdness that warrants a call to your Internet service provider. Troubleshooting Name Resolution DNS errors tend to be the more common cause of Active Directory installation issues, and are also a bit trickier to nail down. Your first step is to be certain that your server’s DNS settings are configured correctly.

You’ll recall that you need to allocate 400MB of space for every 1,000 domain users on a domain controller. For Global Catalog servers, you’ll need to set aside this amount, plus half of the database size for each additional domain in the forest. DIT file for its own domain. Each Global Catalog server will require an additional 400MB (200MB * 2 other domains) to store the GC information for the entire forest. ■Note If your network consists of only one domain, you can configure all of your domain controllers as Global Catalogs, since this won’t create any additional replication traffic in a single domain forest.

If it doesn’t locate an appropriate DNS server, you can either allow the wizard to install DNS on the domain controller itself, or select No to install and configure DNS manually. You will need a functioning DNS server in order to install Active Directory, so you should allow the wizard to install one if one isn’t installed elsewhere on your network. Having the DNS Server service installed on a domain controller will also allow you to take advantage of Active Directory–integrated DNS, which we’ll discuss more in Chapter 2.
