You can ski the backcountry for an hour or for days, but snow conditions are often unstable and avalanches are frequent in certain areas or under certain conditions. To help match your abilities with appropriate terrain, it is highly recommended that you consult with ski shop personnel or regional information sources before approaching the backcountry. Remember that conditions are completely unpredictable and depend entirely on weather conditions that can and do change rapidly.

High-tech bikes with 18, 21, or more speeds make it possible for just about anyone who can ride to negotiate at least some of the terrain. Mountain bikers move faster than hikers, and knobby tires can transport you into certain regions where motorized vehicles cannot go.
